Gurukul is a non-profit community organization dedicated to preserving and promoting
Indian languages, arts, and culture. Established in 1998, we proudly serve a vibrant
community of over 1,500 students, predominantly of East Indian heritage, aged 5-16.
Our comprehensive program runs for 30 Sundays each year, spanning 7 grade levels.
For 2.5 hours every class day, students engage in immersive language and cultural
education, fostering a deep appreciation for their heritage.
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of India’s most significant holidays, celebrated by
East Indians and many others around the world. Diwali marks new beginnings and
symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. For some, it also
coincides with harvest and New Year celebrations. Indians decorate their homes with
lights to represent the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. The festival
always falls between October and November, but the exact date varies each year as the
Hindu calendar is based on the lunar cycles. This year, Diwali falls on November 1st
and will be observed between October 31st and November 1st1.
Gurukul serves as a home away from home for our member families residing in the
Greater Seattle area. Each year, we gather our students and families and strive to
celebrate Diwali with the same zeal and spirit as it is celebrated in India.
As a children and academic-centric organization, we focus the event on children. The
celebration includes a carnival of games and activities themed around the festival,
followed by incantation of the Goddess Laxmi, the deity of prosperity, and a theatrical
production that illustrates one of the mythological epics associated with Diwali.
